The next time you take to the open road on a bicycle, consider this: the Center for Disease Control estimates that each year, bicycle accidents will cause 500,000 injuries requiring emergency room treatment and 700 wrongful deaths.   These numbers are staggering, especially considering that the majority of these bike crashes occur in highly-congested urban areas.

In general, bicyclists are highly prone to personal injury, and in the worst cases, wrongful death.  Although they are powered only by human exertion, bicycles can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour in some circumstances.  They provide very little, if any, protection from injury in the event of a collision with a car or truck.   Bike accident injuries are even more severe when a person is not wear protective gear, such as a helmet. Under the law, bicyclists should be given the right-of-way—but frequently are not—by motorists when traveling on open roads, especially when there are no designated bike lanes.  When negligent driving is the cause of a bicyclist’s injuries, the responsible party should be held accountable.

On the night of Friday, November 7, 2014, a man named Tyrone Celestine was riding his bicycle on the LA 94 highway in Beaux Bridge, Louisiana.  Mr. Celestine was a local resident who often enjoyed riding his bike around town.  On this occasion, he was not wearing a helmet.  Suddenly, and without warning, Mr. Celestine was slammed from behind by a 1999 Dodge truck being driven by 52-year-old Lawrence Sam, also of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.  Mr. Celestine was catapulted off his bicycle and onto the pavement.  He was rushed to the hospital, but he succumbed to his severe injuries shortly after his arrival.

The driver, Lawrence Sam, was not injured in the accident.  However, police did give him a breathalyzer test.  The results of the test revealed that Mr. Sam was well over the legal limit.  As a result, he was charged with careless operation of a motor vehicle, open alcoholic container violations, and vehicular homicide. He was booked at the St. Martin Parish Jail in Beaux Bridge.
