Massachusetts Man Arrested After Allegedly Fatally Striking Pedestrian With His Vehicle While Drunk .

Drunk drivers pose a serious risk of bodily injury, not only to themselves but also to other drivers and the passengers in the vehicles they are driving.  The convenience and comfort that is involved with driving a car also carries with it the obligation and duty to drive in a safe, responsible manner.  When someone decides to drive a car with an illegal amount of alcohol in their bloodstream, they ignore that obligation and should be held accountable for any injuries they cause. This may take the form of criminal charges for the drunk driver’s behavior, but this alone does little to compensate a victim for the injuries they sustained.  Often times, the best and only way for a victim of a drunk driver to recover money damages for their personal injuries is through a successful civil lawsuit.

One Dorchester, Massachusetts man, Anthony Buchanan, now faces the possibility of both a criminal and civil trial after he reportedly fatally struck a pedestrian with his vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol.  Officials allege that, at around 10:30 PM last week, Buchanan was driving erratically and speeding when he struck a pedestrian, forty-six-year-old Johnette Sims, at an intersection in Mattapan, MA.   According to wcvb.com, Buchanan stopped briefly after striking Sims, but then drove away.

Police began searching for Buchanan, and he reportedly turned himself in shortly after the collision.  Buchanan was charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of liquor and related crimes.  In addition to his criminal charges and trial, however, Buchanan may also face a civil lawsuit by Sims’s estate and family.  Because Sims’s death was caused by Buchanan’s actions, he may be held financially accountable in a civil action wrongful death lawsuit.
